Angelfish are a popular and iconic freshwater species known for their elegant, triangular shape and long, flowing fins. Native to South America, they bring a graceful and striking presence to any aquarium.
General Care
Angelfish thrive in a tall, spacious aquarium with plenty of vertical swimming space to accommodate their height and flowing fins. They enjoy tanks with plants, driftwood, and other decorations that provide shelter without restricting movement. Angelfish are relatively hardy, but they require stable water conditions and regular maintenance, including weekly water changes of 20–30%. They are best kept in small groups or pairs, as they are social fish, but their territorial nature may emerge, especially during breeding.
Food
Angelfish are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet. High-quality flakes or pellets can form their staple food, but they should also be given live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to enhance their health and colours. Blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can also be offered occasionally. Feed them small portions daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes to avoid waste.
Additional Information
Angelfish are generally peaceful but can become territorial, particularly during breeding or in cramped conditions. They can coexist with other medium-sized, non-aggressive tankmates such as tetras, rasboras, or peaceful cichlids. However, avoid housing them with small fish that may be seen as prey or with fin-nipping species that might damage their delicate fins. Their majestic appearance and interesting behaviour make them a favourite among aquarists seeking a centrepiece fish for their aquarium.
