Assassin Snail Overview

The Assassin Snail is a striking freshwater snail known for its conical shell, adorned with black and yellow stripes. Renowned for its ability to control pest snail populations, this peaceful yet predatory snail is a practical and decorative addition to aquariums.

General Care

Assassin Snails thrive in a well-maintained aquarium with a soft substrate, such as sand, which allows them to burrow naturally. They appreciate a tank with plenty of hiding spots, like plants, rocks, or driftwood, which mimic their natural habitat. These snails are highly adaptable and do well in community tanks with stable water parameters. Regular water changes of 20–30% weekly are essential to keep them healthy. While they are peaceful, Assassin Snails should not be kept with very small or delicate tankmates that might become prey, such as tiny shrimp.

Food

Assassin Snails are carnivorous and primarily feed on other snails, making them excellent for controlling unwanted snail populations in aquariums. If pest snails are not present, they can be fed sinking pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, or small pieces of fish. They are opportunistic feeders and will also scavenge on uneaten food and organic debris at the bottom of the tank. Feeding them every day is usually sufficient.

Additional Information

Assassin Snails are slow-moving but efficient predators and should not be housed with other snails that you want to keep alive. They are hardy and easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Their unique striped shells and beneficial role in pest control make them both a functional and attractive addition to any aquarium. Keep in mind that Assassin Snails can reproduce, but their population grows slowly compared to other snail species, making them manageable.
