The Balloon Molly is a selectively bred variety of the common molly, known for its rounded, balloon-like body shape. Peaceful and colourful, it is a popular choice for freshwater community tanks and is loved for its friendly nature and striking appearance.
General Care
Balloon Mollies thrive in a well-maintained, moderately planted aquarium with open swimming spaces. They are hardy fish that adapt to various water conditions but prefer tanks with plenty of decorations and hiding spots, such as plants, driftwood, or rocks. These fish are social and should be kept in groups of at least three or more, as they enjoy interacting with their own kind. Regular water changes of 20–30% weekly are essential for keeping them healthy, as they are sensitive to poor water quality. They are also livebearers, so a separate breeding tank may be needed if you want to manage fry.
Food
Balloon Mollies are omnivores and have a varied diet. Their primary food can consist of high-quality flakes or pellets, but they also enjoy blanched vegetables like courgette, spinach, or cucumber. Additionally, they benefit from protein-rich treats such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia, offered occasionally. Feeding them small portions daily will help maintain their health and prevent overfeeding.
Additional Information
Balloon Mollies are peaceful and ideal for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. However, avoid housing them with fin-nipping species, as their fins can be an easy target. Due to their distinctive body shape, Balloon Mollies are prone to digestive and swim bladder issues, so a varied diet with plenty of fibre is crucial. Their vibrant colours and active personalities make them a delightful addition to aquariums designed to cater to their needs.
