Banjo Catfish Overview

The Banjo Catfish, named for its flat, banjo-shaped body, is a fascinating bottom-dwelling freshwater species. Known for its nocturnal habits and excellent camouflage, this peaceful fish is a unique addition to any aquarium.

General Care

Banjo Catfish prefer aquariums with soft, sandy substrates to allow them to bury themselves as they naturally would in the wild. They thrive in dimly lit tanks with plenty of hiding spots like driftwood, rocks, and dense plants to create a safe and comfortable environment. These fish are slow-moving and solitary, so they don't require much open swimming space but do need a stable and well-maintained tank with good water quality. Regular water changes of around 20-30% weekly are important for their health. They are highly peaceful and get along well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species.

Food

Banjo Catfish are omnivorous bottom-feeders and eat a variety of foods. They enjoy live or frozen options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blackworms, as well as sinking pellets or tablets designed for catfish. They may also scavenge leftover food that falls to the bottom of the tank, but make sure they are properly fed and not solely reliant on scraps. Feed them in the evening or at night to align with their nocturnal activity.

Additional Information

Banjo Catfish are excellent at blending into their surroundings, often appearing motionless and buried in the substrate during the day. This behavior is natural and shouldn’t be mistaken for illness. They are very low-maintenance and adaptable but avoid housing them with aggressive or overly active tankmates that might outcompete them for food. Their unique appearance and behaviors make them a rewarding choice for aquarists who appreciate more unusual fish species.
