The Black Ghost Knifefish is a sleek, nocturnal freshwater fish native to South America. Known for its elegant, ribbon-like body and unique swimming style, this fascinating species is a favorite among experienced aquarists.
General Care
Black Ghost Knifefish need a spacious tank with a soft, sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places like caves, driftwood, or dense vegetation to mimic their natural habitat. They are sensitive to water quality, so a powerful filtration system and regular water changes (around 20-30% weekly) are essential. Due to their nocturnal nature, dim lighting or subdued environments help them feel secure and encourage natural behaviors. Their active swimming style and potential to grow up to 50 cm mean they need ample space to thrive.
Food
Black Ghost Knifefish are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They enjoy live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms, and small pieces of fish or shrimp. Some individuals may also accept high-quality sinking pellets or tablets made for carnivorous species. Feeding is best done in the evening or at night to align with their nocturnal activity patterns, offering food daily in portions they can finish within a few minutes.
Additional Information
Black Ghost Knifefish are generally peaceful but may become territorial with others of their kind, so it’s best to house only one unless the tank is exceptionally large. They can coexist with other medium to large-sized, peaceful tankmates, but aggressive or overly boisterous species should be avoided. These fish use weak electrical signals for navigation and communication, so avoid keeping them with other species that rely on electric fields to prevent stress. Their fascinating behaviors and unique appearance make them a captivating centerpiece in any well-maintained aquarium.
